Today’s goal-reaching videos: Mario Strikers Charged

We collectively yawned a few days ago when the latest Mario Strikers Charged trailer appeared online — it’s a pre-animated video with no in-game footage. But the U.K. Mario Strikers commercial tipped us over the edge, and we’re showing those videos in this post, especially after today’s news of a U.S. July 30 release.

While we’re glad that the Wii is getting some online action, we chortled at the tagline of “the first online game on Wii.” How about “finally, an online game on Wii”? At least the ad doesn’t pretend that Mii Parade is a game.

See the videos after the break.

NBA Playoffs: Cavaliers Get The Chance To Make Us Care

At this point, most of the NBA world is so afraid of a Spurs-Pistons final that they’re willing to do anything to prevent, even rooting for a listless, clearly distracted LeBron James to fulfill some sort of imaginary destiny. We’ll find out if he can start it off tonight. Surely, if the Bulls can win a game at the Palace, the Cavs can too, right?

Hey, we need something, folks, because Baron Davis ain’t walking through that door.

When it comes to Blog Show, Bog is my co-pilot. We get along on-camera, online and even out on the town. That said, he’s just about the last person I’d expect to see mounting a steed. Don’t get me wrong. He’s not devoid of athleticism or anything of the sort. I could easily imagine him pump-faking into a dribble-drive layup or hammering a forehand winner from the baseline, but the guy’s something of an indoorsman, more specifically a newspaperman-turned-blogger and loving husband-turned-father. All of which makes this photograph one of the finest I’ve ever seen.

The pic comes from a series of photos taken at the America’s Cup of Polo, which took place out in Leesburg, Va. last weekend. Steinz was there with Comcast SportsNet (and Blog Show) producer Adam Littlefield to put together a highly enjoyable Bog TV piece, which was the best horse-related video I’d seen in some time. Until this morning, that is, when I was scouring the internerd for Preakness coverage.

The dynamic duo of Steinz & Littles didn’t disappoint as they were at Pimlico on Saturday and witnessed something I was previously unfamiliar with: Port-a-Racin’. The competition consists of drunk dudes running atop a row of port-a-potties while other drunk dudes throw beer at them. The results are endlessly entertaining. Take a look.

Predictably, it’s With Leather’s new favorite sport, and I’ve got to say, it’s better than theonly other competition of substance I’ve witnessed within the confines of a horse racing track. That was at Foxfield in Charlottesville in the spring of ‘99 when a guy in my fraternity slid through a piss trough only to win $90 and hot pursuit from the authorities. True story. It looked and sounded a lot like this.

A while back we told you about Creighton’s Pat Venditte, whose main claim to fame — besides being a college junior who looks like he’s 12 — is that he can pitch with both hands. OK, perhaps not that impressive when you put him next to the Amazing Rubber Boy, but we have trouble picking up a fork left-handed, so he has our attention.

The Blue Jays’ right/left hander has the attention of the Missouri Valley Conference as well. Venditte has a 32 2/3 innings scoreless streak in conference play, including four innings of hitless relief on Saturday as Creighton closed the regular season with a 4-3 loss to Missouri State. Venditte struck out four and walked none, facing the minimum 12 hitters, although it is not known how many he faced right- and left-handed. Venditte (7-2) has an overall 2.00 ERA with 77 strikeouts over 76 innings pitched. Creighton, the No. 2 seed, opens play in the MVC playoffs on Wednesday with an 11 a.m. game vs. Southern Illinois in Springfield, Mo. We hereby declare that game to be Pat Venditte Day at Hammons Field, where all in attendance must alternate hands between each gulp of beer.

Of course the question everyone asks is: What if he faces a switch-hitter? Would the at-bat ever end? As we understand it, college rules say that a pitcher must declare which arm he’s going to use prior to each batter, although we can’t imagine that scenario comes up often. And in the pros there is also a recent precedent, inspired by the great Greg Harris.

On September 25, 1995, Harris pitched for the Montreal Expos, who were 24 1/2 games out of first place in the National League East, against the Cincinnati Reds. After his first lefty pitch sailed to the backstop, Harris worked a scoreless ninth inning. He faced four batters (two from each side of the mound), allowing a walk and recording three groundouts. It was the next-to-last appearance in the majors for Harris who retired after the season.

Lord, how we miss the Expos.

brady222.jpgLast week, we published some rather unusual photos of new Browns quarterback Brady Quinn and the wedding of his sister and Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk. Well, Hawk spoke this weekend about the photos and he isn’t too happy.

“Yeah, that was just a bad decision on the photographers we chose,. It’s been an issue a little bit. We had no idea what happened. Some photos got put up without our permission. I just feel bad for Brady and other people that were at the wedding, because it was just something that the D.J. had set up, I don’t know, some ‘Village People’ thing that they did, and some pictures got out and it’s tough. I guess you’ve got to watch every single thing you do because everything’s public now.”

We’re not sure when in A.J. Hawk’s life everything wasn’t public — including wedding pictures distributed online — but whichever. We think the world is a better place with this picture of Brady Quinn being passed around. We suspect even Brady would agree.
