Sports Illustrated’s Adam Duerson praises Wii motion, especially in games like Wii Sports, noting the console’s ability to peak the interest of his non-gamer friends. Regarding how well the system’s pack-in wets the palette, he states: “Wii Sports is meant to showcase the motion-based features of the Wii in a very primitive, ground-level state. In other words: ‘Here’s what we can do. Just wait until we make it better!’ … [It] also happens to be the best example of what the Wii ultimately is: a group-friendly system that is easy to pick up and play on the fly because of its intuitiveness.”

MJD Does Your Holiday Shopping for You

My favorite thing going on in FanHouse this week is MJD’s Santa’s Lead Blocker series, where he finds terrificly absurd NFL-related items on eBay and posts them up for your gift giving consideration. So far making the cut is a Raiders Man Thong and 1978 NFL lunchbox (with thermos!), but the hands-down, must-have gift of the season is this tasteful 1991 Warren Moon jacket:

Wow. That’s a fine item right there. I want that. Actually, I’d prefer a Mark Rypien, but Moon will do. MJD is posting up one new item per weekday, so stay tuned.

Giant Balancing Act on Thinning NFL Football Tightrope

The New York Giants are in trouble.

Of course, if you’ve been watching some NFL Football action the past month, you already knew this. It’s been four weeks, one goddamn month, since the New York Giants won one measly football game.

They lost four NFL Football games in a row, and all those losses were self-inflicted. It seems these New York Giants doesn’t know squat how to finish football games, and boy, were they pummeled on that field the past month.

Now, they find themselves hovering between NFL playoffs contention and collapsing out from it. Luckily for them, these Giants are part of a pathetic NFC Conference where a team with a struggling quarterback sits at the top of the food chain. (Yep, I’m talking about the NFC conference leaders, Chicago Bears, and their struggling QB, Rex Grossman.)

The Giants, as expected, lost to the red hot Dallas Cowboys. However, one thing going for the Giants after this game is the fact that their performance last Sunday was the best performance they had after the past three weeks. Losing is not something to be happy about but these days, any glimmer of hope, no matter how pathetic it is, will be as fine as wine for the struggling Giants.

Yep, these days, the Giants doesn’t have much of a choice.

In a strange way, the latest loss, a 23-20 defeat against the Dallas Cowboys, decided on a last-second field goal Sunday, brought a fresh breath of air in New York. The Giants are running out of chances to recover, but they were oddly buoyed by the game against the Cowboys. They played well for the first time in three weeks, and they blamed their habit of…

NFL Football DE Shawne Merriman is a Juice Monkey

And THAT is according to a sports talk show host named Anita Marks.

Yep, apparently, Anita Marks didn’t like the present nickname given to San Diego Chargers defensive end, Shawne Merriman. Nope, she didn’t like the nickname, ”Lights Out,” so she gave Merriman a new one, JUICE MONKEY.

Of course, the new nickname offended some blacks. Anita Marks on ESPN Radio referred to Shawne Merriman, the San Diego Chargers defensive monster, as a ”juice monkey” after being suspended for his alleged steroid use.

”It’s inappropriate,” said Rob Long, a black host on a competing sports station, WNST, 1570 AM, who received several calls about the remark. ”It was careless, and I think she should apologize.”

Hmm… Now I don’t know if this black dude’s comments are indeed sincere or he’s just trying to kill the competition. Well, the rival is down right now and this is the perfect time to kick ‘em in the ass. Hell, I’d do it too.Marks, a former professional football player, did not return two calls seeking comment, but apparently said on the air yesterday that she uses the remark to refer to steroid users regardless of their color.

After a month-long ban slapped on Shawne Merriman because of his…

Zach Randolph Era in Portland Begins

Finally, there’s one bright glimmer of hope at the Rose Garden.

The Portland Trailblazers are back. Let me get that one out. Although it’s still a little early to say that these Blazers will see NBA Playoffs action come April, there’s no denying that these Blazers are certainly looking like one of the more promising teams in the league.

And that’s thanks to franchise forward, Zach Randolph. The Blazers are 8 ½ games behind Northwest division leaders, Utah Jazz, but with the way no.50 is playing right now, the Blazers have an opportunity to catch and probably overtake the red hot Jazz after the NBA All Star break.

Impossible? Well, when you talk about the Blazers these days, nothing is impossible. Of course, Zach Randolph knows that too well.

People have been wrong about Zach Randolph for a long time. They were wrong when they said he was crazy to leave Michigan State for the NBA after his freshman season. Those people said he wasn’t ready to play at the next level.

They were wrong when they said his days were numbered in Portland because of his antics. Not only has Randolph blossomed into a bona fide star, he also is looked upon as the franchise player on a young Trail Blazers team.

This season, Randolph, the man who once backed up Rasheed Wallace, is averaging almost 26 points and 10 rebounds per game. He is turning out to be one of the…
