Lord Help Us: They’re Doing The Wave At Wrigley

wrigleyfieldwave.jpgOur personal favorite moment of our night at RFK Stadium was when the tiny smattering of Nationals fans spread throughout the place tried to cobble together a version of The Wave. The response of our Deadspin corner was instantaneous: We scoffed, scowled, booed, grumbled. We were very proud.

Well, the national menace that is The Wave has now made its way to the sacred kegs of Wrigley Field. As one would probably expect, Cubs fans are up in arms. As well they should be.

The Chicago Tribune interviews the Patient Zero of The Wave, Krazy George Henderson, and we are not the least bit surprised that the guy who proudly proclaims that he invented the wave calls himself “Krazy George.” His quote will make you cringe even more.

“I think it would be much more acceptable if it started somewhere like Yankee Stadium,” George said. “Then it would probably be bowed down to by baseball fans and they’d put a monument up.”

For the record, it does not make one a “purist” to hate the wave. It just makes one “not a moron.”

MARS Makes Announcements For 8/26 NEW DEAL; Saeki Pays A Surprise Visit

MARS’ press conference for their August 26th NEW DEAL card had a peculiar blend of things both announced, and unannounced.

MARS producer Yuki Amano held a press conference today, alongside with Brazilian sibling duo Rodrigo and Carina Damm, to announce the first bouts for MARS’ August 26th NEW DEAL card at the famous Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. Amano announced that MARS would continue with its mixture of kickboxing and mixed martial arts bouts, announcing the participation of MARS kickboxing veterans Yuzo Matsumoto and Seol Bo Kyung, as well as the participation of Koichi Pettas, the top student of K-1 veteran Nicholas Pettas at his Spirit Gym.

As previously announced, the MMA portion of the card will be highlighted by MARS’ 83 kilogram tournament, featuring a very international crop of strong up-and-comers. Only seven of the eight participants have been announced so far, leaving one vacancy to be filled in the coming weeks. Amano announced that the first official tournament bout would be between Holland’s Bastiaan Rejen, the 83 kilogram Shooto Europe grappling champion, and 2005 ADCC Japan Trials winner Hidemi Mihara, who won last month’s four man 83 kilogram Japanese tournament to earn a berth in this tournament.

Also scheduled to compete in the tournament are Brazil’s Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento, France’s Bryan Rafiq, Spain’s Daniel Tabera, the United States’ John Michael Kolosci, and South Korea’s Myeon Ho Bae.

In addition to the tournament, there will be several feature MMA bouts including American MFC ace Eddie Alvarez, rising Brazilian Marcelo Brito, and the aforementioned Damm siblings. Both Damms were successful in their MARS debuts at Shinjuku FACE in July, and were gracious for the opportunity to fight in Japan.

“I was glad to fight here,” said Rodrigo. While no opponent has been named for the Damm brother, Rodrigo stated, “Whoever my opponent is, I don’t mind.” Rodrigo stated that while in Japan, he is working on his muay thai training at Saenchai Gym, and his MMA training at Team GRABAKA.

His sister Carina, who was victorious in a controversial bout with Miku Matsumoto on July 21st, already has her sights set high. “I would like to fight anyone, but I want to face Megumi Fujii,” said Carina.

MARS’ director was adamant about giving Damm the opportunity to face the G-Shooto ace. Amano continued, “I want to negotiate hard with Fujii. I would like Carina to show her full ability.”

Just when it seemed that the press conference was winding down, the room was met with a big surprise. As the media were finishing up their questions with Yuki Amano, Shigeru Saeki, the president of DEEP, entered the room.

Two weeks ago, Saeki announced that the DEEP organization would no longer work with MARS as a result of the aforementioned controversy in the Miku Matsumoto vs. Carina Damm fight. “MIKU” complained to the referee that Damm was grabbing her glove while attempting to apply an armbar, and vehemently disagreed with the stoppage.

“The organization has a problem,” Saeki said, speaking with reporters on July 29th. Saeki also claimed that the rules of the bout between Matsumoto and Damm were changed only two days before the fight. Saeki stated clearly, “We have no relationship from now on.”

Saeki spoke to Amano directly, interrupting the press conference. “I didn’t come here to fight today. I came to talk ordinarily. You said that there was no room for discussion; but I heard there was a press conference today so I came,” said Saeki.

Saeki, backed by Team ROKEN’s Yoshinori Oniki, elaborated on what he felt was an unjust handling of the Matsumoto vs. Damm bout in July, and said that the two should rematch at the August 26th card, before exiting, leaving a speechless room behind him.

It just wouldn’t be the NFL without some truly obsessed, frightening fans, and we’ve got some pretty worthy ones in the Dead Tree Club, backers of the Washington Redskins and almost certainly the type of guys who beat up Daniel Snyder in high school.

We can’t quite do this video justice, except to say that white people are so, so scary.

And if you’d like to know more about the DTC — perhaps you are intrigued by their ideas and would like to subscribe to their newsletter — you can check out the principles’ MySpace pages:

The Mayor.
The President.

So, yeah, Eagles fans BEWARE.

All right, so we know this isn’t real, and we know it’s just an NFL promotional video (for a product we don’t use; we prefer Yahoo for our all fantasy games, to be honest with you), but we still could not resist.

You see, we’ve been diehards of the Buzzsaw That Is The Arizona Cardinals so long that they’ve actually had two other names. And never, ever have we seen the abilities of a Buzzsaw player perceived as so overwhelming that a slight exaggeration of them turns them into otherwordly. But now, we have Neil Rackers, a Buzzsaw kicker who is also a University of Illinois graduate. He’s the perfect Deadspin machine.

So go, Neil, go: It’s the first time we can remember that our best player hasn’t been the punter.

goodellcommish.jpgThe guy right here is Roger Goodell, who is very likely to become the next commissioner of the NFL, perhaps as early as today. In the past, discussions concerning the new commissioner were contentious; Paul Tagliabue himself was the product of an ugly power play that pushed out the late Jim Finks.

It is not expected to be nearly as contentious this year, if just because Al Davis died 15 years ago. (Seriously, can you believe how bad he looks? Right now Fidel Castro is, like, “ooh, papi, that man looks rough.”) But in case anything weird or kooky happens today, the folks at Sports Business Journal — “By covering how people cover the inconsequential, we in fact become consequential ourselves” — is live-blogging the NFL meetings in Chicago. The first vote is at 4 p.m. ET, but we suspect they’ll find plenty to write about in between now and then. “Hey, some guy in the lobby is smoking. This hotel is non-smoking, buddy!”

esteinbach.jpgWhat more can we tell you: Another Bengal got arrested. This time it was Bootsy Collins favoite left guard Eric Steinbach, who was arrested for operating a boat under the influence on Saturday night. He was, in fact, in the water at the time, though we admit it would be funnier if he weren’t. He is … let’s see … the fifth Bengal to be arrested this offseason; he’s still got a ways to go to catch Chris Henry.

So, how are the Bengals dealing with the problem? They’re cracking down on fans!

The football team has set up a telephone hot line - 513-381-JERK (5375) - that fans with cell phones will be able to call to report obnoxious behavior in the stands. Those who use excessive foul language will be warned. If they persist, they risk being ejected from the game and having their season tickets and seat licenses revoked. Those who behave worse might also be arrested and jailed.

Generally speaking, we’re not sure this is such a bad idea. But we just hope someone’s patrolling the field as well.

If you were featured in a sports video game, what rating would you give yourself in terms of power, speed, and ability? East Carolina University football players react to their digital counterparts in EA’s NCAA Football 07 as reported by the Rocky Mount Telegram:

  • “I like the rating of 97 in speed. I feel like I could have been a little bit better overall though.”
  • “I wish my rating would have been a little bit higher, but it’s whatever they want to do.”
  • “Kasey Ross [who is apparently known for his speed on the team] should not be no 70-something… He should be high 80s, low 90s.”

Who are the ECU Pirates? That question probably refutes the above concerns.
