The MMA wars (K-1 and PRIDE, with Inoki in 2003) have become a TV programming staple in Japan on New Year’s Eve since 2001. Tens of millions of dollars have been spent by the major networks (Tokyo Broadcasting System, Nippon TV, and Fuji TV) to compete with NHK’s Kohaku (Red & White […]

Earlier this morning, reports surfaced that major members of the powerful Goto-gumi yakuza group were arrested. Just minutes ago, Nikkan Sports released a more detailed news article. The news outlet discusses, in passing, the influence of Goto-gumi on the fight game in Japan (something I alluded to on the message board). […]

The reason the Lakers lost their 3-1 lead? Honestly? We think it was that ridiculous “Hallway Series” name. That’s really the best name they could come up with? Do they even have hallways in Los Angeles?

So here we are, with a series that people should be looking forward to more than they are, considering it’s the freaking Clippers four wins away from the conference finals. We have a sneaking suspicion this is going to end up the best of the four series.

Here’s a look at the series from around the Web:

Daily Quickie: Clippers in seven.
YAYSports!: Clippers in six.
The Association: Suns in seven.
J.E. Skeets: Suns in six.
Complete Sports: Suns in seven.
Chris Sheridan: Suns in seven.
True Hoop: Suns in five.
Deadspin: Suns in seven. Sorry. We’re not ready for the Clippers in the conference finals yet. We’re just not.

Let’s hear ‘em in the comments, folks, and enjoy the games tonight.

When we came up with the whole Who Shot Mamba? film idea, we really just thought it’d be a blast to make and show everyone. We’ve thought the same thing all along with Mamba’s ongoing identity crisis.

Little did we know that in the wake of Game 7, this might be a real issue we’re going to need to explore. Everyone seems to have an opinion on whether Kobe tanked it or what in the the second half, and honestly, it’s hard to figure one way or the other. ESPN’s Chris Broussard thinks the dude’s brain is seriously, seriously screwy.

Alas, thanks to our fancy Hollywood lifestyle, we got into a preview screening of Poseidon the other day, and lo and behold, who was there? He seemed fine to us, other than a little bit of talking to himself. Who doesn’t do that now and then?

Only your donations will ensure this gets sorted out this summer. And yes, we know the definitive answer. It’s right here on our hard drive, ready to be shot and broadcasted right to you.

Joe Morgan Blows Your Mind

As we continue to try to make peace with ESPN’s ridiculous Bonds coverage last evening, we strap on our Fire Joe Morgan helmet for a moment and present our favorite moment from last night’s telecast, as relayed by a reader (and mentioned by a couple of commenters):

“As Barry walks into left field, he is faced with a massive banner, that must be held by 30 - 40 people across the first row of the left field bleachers. It reads, ‘Babe did it on hot dogs and beer. Hank did it with class. How did you do it?’

Joe Morgan, clutching his Sports Emmy, says, ‘The funny thing about that is that, wasn’t beer illegal in Babe Ruth’s day?’

Dude, totally. He’s absolutely right. Whoa.

Playoff Pants Party: Heat Vs. Nets

The Nets and Heat tip off tonight in Miami, and it’s fun to play the game of “Who’s it less painful to root for: Pat Riley or Vince Carter?” Tough call, really; we tend to veer toward cutting Vince Carter some slack, if just because the guy clearly knows how to have a good time.

We don’t mean to say that people aren’t as excited about this series as they are the other three, but … well, tickets in East Rutherford are still available.

Here’s a look at the series from around the Web:

Daily Quickie: Nets in six.
YAYSports!: Nets in seven.
The Association: Heat in five.
J.E. Skeets: Nets in seven.
Complete Sports: Heat in seven.
Chris Sheridan: Nets in seven.
True Hoop: Heat in seven.
Deadspin: Heat in six. Even though Gary Payton is the only point guard we know more tired and washed up than Jason Kidd, we have a feeling the Nets, deep down, kind of stink.

Your predictions in the comments, if you can work yourselves up to it on a Monday.
