This blog has been named Mr. Irrelevant for two years* yet has never mentioned anything about the last player selected in the NFL Draft. To appease all the draftheads out there who’ve been Googling “mr. irrelevant” and going to misterirrelevant.com only to stumble across my site, that’s about to change. This one’s for you, dorks …
Earlier this evening, the Oakland Raiders selected Kevin McMahan with the 255th and final pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. This means he’s a better prospect than Marcus Vick (who did not get drafted) and is in for loads of fun at Irrelevant Week. Here’s what Gil Brandt has to say about him …
“McMahan (6-2, 196) is a big, tall wide receiver from Maine with 4.5 speed and good hands.”
He’ll need all of that and more to crack Oakland’s receiving corps of Randy Moss, Jerry Porter, Ronald Curry and Doug Gabriel. Hope’s not lost, though, when you consider the notable Mr. Irrelevants from years past. QB Bill Kenney (’78, Miami) made the Pro Bowl in ‘83 and later became a senator in Missouri. LB Marty Moore (’94, New England) played in Super Bowl XXXI. FB Jim Finn (’99, Chicago) has started in the Giants backfield for the past three seasons.
Plus, the draft is only seven rounds deep. Mr. Irrelevant doesn’t go that late anymore. Keenan McCardell was taken in the 12th round (12th!) back in ‘91 by Washington and he’s caught over 800 balls and posted five 1,000-yard seasons.
So McMahan may make it after all, but I probably won’t post about it much.

I’ve got a feeling that Suns fans are about to break into a terrific Seattle Seahawks fans impression. Kobe Bryant just buried a jumper from the elbow at the end of overtime to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead in their series against the Suns.
At the end of regulation, James Jones was pretty clearly held as he went up for a lob pass on an inbounds play that could’ve given the Suns the lead. And at the end of overtime, setting up Kobe’s jumper, Steve Nash 1) tried to call a timeout, and 2) thought he was fouled, as he was tied up to force a jump ball between himself and Luke Walton. Walton won the tip, Kobe collected the ball, came down and stuck a contested jumper to give the Lakers the win.
And this was after the end of the regulation period, when Smush Parker harassed Nash into a turnover, tipped the ball of Devan George, who then handed it off to Kobe who hit a crazy high-off-the-glass layup to tie the score. Kobe then hugged Smush, grabbed his head, and repeated twice into his ear, “You’re a bad motherfucker.”
As it turns out, the monster dunk over Nash in Game Three was only part one of Kobe’s “I Got Your MVP Right Here” statement.

There are some serious balls on these Chicago Bulls. Behind 24 points from Andres Nocioni, 23 from Ben Gordon, and 21 points and 9 assists from Kirk Hinrich, the Chicago Bulls have pulled even in their series with the Miami Heat, 2 games apiece.
It’s a real actual series now, a series in which it’s entirely possible that either team will win… and I must confess, I didn’t see that coming. These Bulls are younger, they’re more athletic, they make Miami run more than they want to… and Miami’s getting frustrated.
There was an incident in today’s game where Dwyane Wade and Gary Payton were sniping at each other, and Alonzo Mourning and Shaq had to step in and calm things down. Hopefully, part of Shaq’s conversation with Payton sounded like, “He’s Dwyane Wade, and you’re not. That means you shut up.”
The bad news for the Bulls is that Tyson Chandler went down with an ankle injury late in the game, and had to be physically carried off the court by Luke Schenscher and a Bulls trainer. I think it was nice of the Bulls to let Schenscher carry him off so he’ll feel like he’s earning his paycheck.
Game Five is Tuesday night at 8:00.

Five items of interest after tuning in and out of Day 1 of the NFL Draft …
The Big Three
1. Houston fumbles the first pick. How you go with a defensive end at No. 1 overall when a guy like Bush is on the board is beyond me.
2. Leinart slides into the dream scenario. The predicted slide occurrs but ends with Phoenix where he’ll stay in PAC-10 country, learn from Warner, throw to Boldin and Fitzgerald and handoff to Edge.
3. Washington loves the U. Washington 2nd-rounder Rocky McIntosh not only joins the Reggie Cleveland All-Stars but a squad featuring fellow ‘Canes Taylor, Portis and Moss. These guys should totally record a song about runnin’ trains. Too bad the ‘Skins had to trade two 2nd-round picks and one late-round pick just to move up 18 spots to get him.
4. Chris Berman needs to take it down a notch. Aside from his grating personality, spoiling the picks before Tagliabue gets a chance to announce them is just inexcusable.
5. Tennessee gets some serious star power. Vince and LenDale with their top two picks means the star-craved Titans may have skill-position stars for the next 10 years.

There’s an old saying that goes, “In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.” The point being that weakness is only weakness when compared to strength. This brings about an interesting question, how do you define strength? The answer simply is, to compare to history and compare as many as possible. This brings us to the subject of the article Andrei Arlovski. The man who will defend his Heavyweight title come April 15th.
For those not familiar with Boxing, or boxing history, Rocky Marciano is a pretty interesting figure. He went undefeated as champion and retired without losing the title. Marciano’s reign of dominance however was tainted by the fact that after winning the title he seemed to have no top quality opponents. It’s a trend that seems all to familiar in the modern day.
